My Picks for the Blue Jar writing project

Blue JarOn September 4th, the GnomeyNewt over at BlueJar.com started a little contest for How To writing.  Always on the look out for anything to write about, I grappled with the idea of a good How To article that would appeal to my readers, as well as the readers likely to read my entry.

Alas I decided on a bit of a farce with “How-to Guide: Increasing your sphere of influence“.  People that know me in person will attest, I’m anything but a comedian, but if my attempt at humor couldn’t win a few undeserved votes, my normal writing style surely wasn’t going to get any.

As part of the contest, I now need to cast my votes for whom I thought had the best How-To guides.  I placed as much emphasis on great writing as having a useful how-to.  My top 3 are thus:

Beginners “How to” Guide for SEO by Steve  This is such a complete guide to things SEO that it astounded me.  I definitely picked up a few nuggets of useful information, and I’d say it’s a must read for any beginning blogger, and probably even experienced ones as well.

Eating Crow by Susan Wingate  Susan is a writer by trade, and her wonderful writing style really shown (shined?) through on this one.  I know I’ve read the same basic story before, probably with a different animal, but I still enjoyed it nonetheless.

How To: Add Copyright Notices To Your Blog by Kyle Eslick  Kyle gets my third vote, not for his combination of great writing along with a useful tip, but more for the useful tip.

If you are curious about the rest of the How-To Guides, the entire list can be found here.

Thanks for the vote too. Hope you try out a few of the ideas and see what happens. Probably useful in your line of business.

@ Kyle- you presented your how-to very clearly…and honestly quite a bit better than many of the candidates. Sorry if my vote for you sounded as if I was slighting you at the same time. That wasn’t my intention.

@ MDB- You bet I will.
